Pause, stop, re-focus

We live in a fast-paced world. We are plugged in and connected 24/7. In fact, rarely do we even turn our mobiles off these days.
We can tend to be on autopilot for many tasks, driving, housework etc. We aren't really aware of what we are doing and at the same moment we may not really be present in the moment by moment of our lives. We spin the plates, and then some!
Even when doing nothing in our own heads there is the constant chatter, the planning, worrying, thinking about the past, the future, today. It never ends.
By becoming more aware of our thoughts and feelings from moment to moment we allow the possibility of greater freedom and choice. When life feels like its accelerating even more here are some of my top tips, I’ve been trying to incorporate into my daily life:
Look to children
My children show me time and time again just how much they live in the present moment and how much joy can be had from it. They wake up with a big smile on their face, sometimes even dancing! Yup dancing out of bed! Waking up on the right track can set you up for the day ahead. So, no waking up with a groan and an alarm clock. Although somewhat difficult to do when said children are jumping on your head!
Stop, notice and reflect on something in nature
Do you ever stop to look at the trees, the flowers, and the sky? Taking a moment to stop and reflect on the natural beauty that surrounds you. Or if you are really struggling to take a breath, focus on all the sounds you can hear, yes even in the bustling office, better still step outside to feel gratitude, happiness and the sense of connection to our internal and external realities.
Train your mind to be optimistic
"Watch your thoughts, they become your words, watch your words, they become actions, watch your actions, they become habits, watch your habits they become character and watch your character." Frank Outlaw.
Lately, I have been sticking up positive post-it notes around the house, much to my husband’s amusement. By reading affirmations each day eventually they’ll sink into your subconscious…simples
Just breath
Breathing is such a subconscious exercise, but by focusing on deep breathes we become aware of our bodies and ground ourselves into the present moment. Imagine your lungs are like cups, with each inhale fill the cups to the brim with air, pause and hold for three then exhale slowly and calmly through the nose.
Pay attention
Sight, sound, smell and taste. Pretend whatever you are doing it is the last time you'll ever experience it. Slow down, enjoy the moment.
Before sleep
Be aware of three things that happened that day you are grateful for. Example, today I am grateful for my work colleagues for keeping me topped up with caffeine, my husband texting me before I left work this evening with a choice of dinner that awaits, and finally that I had time to get my thoughts down into this post.
So please, even if for a short while, embrace the present moment, where we are truly alive!
